Like a Weaned Child

As I read the Psalms a while back, my soul clung to a tender word picture in Psalm 131:2-3 (TPT):

“I am humbled and quieted in your presence.
Like a contented child who rests on its mother’s lap,
I’m your resting child and my soul is content in you.”

This image of a soul at rest is deeply settling. Another translation takes it further, Psalm 131:2 (NLT):

“I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.”

The comparison of our souls to a weaned child is vivid and challenging.

A weaned child still sits on its mother’s lap—not because it needs anything, but because it trusts. Comfort comes simply from her presence.

As I reflected on this, Jesus placed a living object lesson before me.

Our youngest granddaughter, Adara Jane, lives in Zambia with her two older siblings and her missionary parents. Though we are separated by distance, we stay connected through FaceTime and the videos her mom and dad send. Watching Adara Jane has brought this Scripture to life.

Adara Jane is not yet weaned. When she is hungry or uncomfortable, she becomes restless—moving, climbing, and reaching for what she needs. Her peace depends on immediate provision.

But there will come a day when Adara Jane will be weaned. She will be able to sit quietly in her mother’s lap, comforted by her presence alone, trusting that her needs will be met.

Isn’t this the invitation Jesus extends to us?

So often, we come to God restless—clinging to answers, outcomes, and control. Yet Psalm 131 invites us into a deeper trust: a calm, quiet, and surrendered soul. To be like a weaned child is not to stop needing God but to stop striving—to rest in who He is.

A Closing Prayer

Jesus, shape our souls to be like a contented, weaned child.
Quiet our anxious thoughts and still our restless hearts.
Help us trust that You see us clearly, love us deeply,
and will faithfully care for us, now and forever.

Amen.
