“So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace.”
Judges 6:24
What if what you need most isn’t for your circumstances to change—but for you to know God is with you in the middle of them?
We often think peace will come when everything settles. When the diagnosis changes. When the financial pressure lifts. When the relationship is restored. When we finally know what tomorrow holds.
Gideon gives us a beautiful picture of this.
When God met Gideon, the Midianites were oppressing Israel. Gideon was hiding in a winepress, afraid and uncertain. God met him there and assured him of His presence.
And then Gideon built an altar and called it Jehovah Shalom—the LORD is Peace.
Here’s what I find remarkable: Gideon’s circumstances hadn’t changed. The Midianites were still there. The battle was still ahead. The problems weren’t over.
The same thing happened to the disciples. After Jesus’ crucifixion, they were hiding behind locked doors, afraid and uncertain. Jesus entered the room and said, “Peace be with you.”
He didn’t first remove everything they were afraid of.
But now, Jesus was there too.
And that’s where peace begins.
Philippians 4 tells us to bring our worries to God through prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. Then comes this promise: “The peace of God…will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
But Paul goes one step further: “And the God of peace will be with you.”
The peace of God is what He gives us.
The God of peace is who He is.
God doesn’t simply send us peace from a distance. He gives us Himself.
We may not be able to control what happens around us. We may not have all the answers. But we can know this:
The LORD is Peace.
And sometimes the greatest peace isn’t found in knowing everything will be okay.
It’s found in knowing we are not facing it alone.
Jehovah Shalom
