Seen by God

Most mornings, you can find me on my back porch with a big cup of hot coffee, watching the sunrise. I’ve always loved the quiet of early mornings. Growing up on a farm, I learned to appreciate the early hours. Those moments shaped something deep within me—a love for stillness and attentiveness.

I also love how my days often end—stepping outside at night with my husband, listening to the birds settle in, and talking about the ways we noticed God at work throughout the day.

One morning, I sensed the Holy Spirit draw my attention to a couple of sparrows nearby. I sat and watched them for a while, enjoying their loud, joyful chatter. Sparrows are incredibly vocal—small, brown-gray, unassuming birds that rarely go unnoticed because of their noise. As I watched them, my thoughts turned to Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:29-30.

“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are numbered.”

Sparrows were among the cheapest foods in Jesus’ day, often sold in bundles to the poorest of the poor. Luke’s Gospel adds a little more to this passage.

“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” (Luke 12:6–7)

In human terms, sparrows were nearly worthless—common, annoying, easily overlooked. Yet Jesus used them to show that even what the world dismisses as insignificant is fully seen and remembered by God. Not one sparrow—or any life—is forgotten.

Jesus reminds us that even the hairs on our heads are numbered. If you feel unseen or insignificant, take heart—He knows you, loves you, and is faithfully working out His plan for your life.
