Walking in Step, Not Looking Sideways (Part 1 of 4)

“Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives… We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.” — Galatians 5:25-26 (MSG)

When we surrendered our lives to Christ, we chose a different way to live. We didn’t simply adopt a new set of beliefs—we chose a life led by the Holy Spirit.

Most of us would say we believe that. We’ve studied it, heard sermons about it, and nodded in agreement. But Paul challenges us to ask a deeper question: Is life in the Spirit simply an idea I believe, or is it shaping how I actually live?

The NIV expresses it this way: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit doesn’t want to guide us only on Sunday mornings. He wants to direct our attitudes, conversations, decisions, relationships, and even our responses to life’s unexpected circumstances. Walking in the Spirit is more than knowing the truth; it’s allowing that truth to influence every detail of our lives.

One of the quickest ways we step out of that rhythm is by comparing ourselves to others. We look at someone else’s gifts, opportunities, accomplishments, or stage of life and begin measuring ourselves against them. Before long, our focus shifts from following Christ to watching everyone else.

Paul reminds us that comparison has no place in a Spirit-led life. God didn’t create copies; He created originals.

Your calling, your experiences, and the people God has placed in your life are uniquely yours. Rather than wishing for someone else’s assignment, embrace the assignment God has entrusted to you.

There really are far more important things to do than compare ourselves with others. There are people to love, lives to encourage, and a Kingdom to advance.

Today, ask yourself: Am I walking in step with the Holy Spirit, or have I become distracted by looking sideways?

Keep your eyes on Christ. He knows exactly where He is leading you.
