An Anchor for the Soul

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.” —Hebrews 6:19-20a

Ships don’t need an anchor on calm days. They need one when the winds rise and the waves crash. Its job is simply to keep the ship from drifting when everything around it is being tossed about.

Life has a way of bringing unexpected storms our way. A difficult diagnosis. Financial uncertainty. Broken relationships. Disappointing news. In those moments, it’s easy to feel pulled in every direction.

That’s why the writer of Hebrews gives us this beautiful promise: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Our hope isn’t wishful thinking or positive optimism. It’s confidence that is firmly anchored in Jesus Christ

Biblical hope isn’t saying, “I hope everything works out.” It’s confidently declaring, “I know who holds me even when nothing is working out.”

Notice that the anchor isn’t a promise in itself. It’s Jesus.

We often anchor ourselves in our health, finances, relationships, careers, or plans.

All of those can drift, but Jesus never does.

The word forerunner is fascinating.

A forerunner wasn’t just someone who arrived first. He went ahead to prepare the way and guarantee that others could follow.

Picture yourself standing at the base of a huge mountain. The climb seems impossible until your guide reaches the summit, secures the ropes to an immovable rock, and signals that it’s safe to proceed.

Hebrews reminds us that Jesus has done exactly that. As our Forerunner, he has gone before us, securing our hope so we can follow with confidence.

Jesus didn’t simply show us the way; he became the way.

So let me leave you with one question: Are you trying to hold on to Jesus, or are you resting in the fact that He is holding on to you?

There is incredible peace in knowing that our security doesn’t depend on the strength of our grip, but on the faithfulness of our Savior.

So, so good!!!!!!! I had not thought of it that way. Am I holding on to Christ or am I trusting that He already holds me? ❤️
