“I AM…” Two words spoken seven times in the Gospel of John by Jesus, carrying a clear message: He is the same God Moses encountered at the burning bush. Two words that angered Jesus’ enemies yet infused His followers with life.
As we reach the final “I AM” statement in our series, Jesus makes one of His most profound declarations:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6
Jesus spoke these words to His disciples the night before His crucifixion. He had just told them He was going away to prepare a place for them and had assured them that He would return for them.
Thomas immediately wanted clarity. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
I understand, Thomas. I tend to think practically, and I would probably have wanted a map as well.
But Jesus didn’t give Thomas a map.
He gave him Himself.
Philip wanted something he could see and understand. Thomas wanted to know the way. Both were seeking certainty about the future. Instead, Jesus invited them into something far more personal—a relationship with Him.
That’s the heart of Christianity.
It’s not primarily a list of rules to follow or a collection of answers to life’s mysteries. It is knowing the Person who holds those answers.
Jesus doesn’t say, “I know the way.”
He says, “I am the Way.”
He doesn’t simply teach the truth.
He is the Truth.
And He doesn’t merely give life.
He is Life.
In a world filled with competing voices and shifting definitions of truth, Jesus offers something solid. We don’t have to figure everything out on our own, nor do we need to know every turn the road will take.
The more we know Jesus, the more confidently we’ll follow Him.
Reflection: Are you trying to figure out the way forward on your own, or are you willing to trust the One who says, “I am the Way”?
Remember this: Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Therefore, I don’t need to have all the answers—I just need to know the One who does.
The more we know who Jesus is, the more confidently we’ll follow Him.
I’ll see you next week as we discover what all seven “I AM” statements mean for us today.
