“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” — 2 Corinthians 4:16
Life has a way of testing our endurance.
We begin many things with excitement and passion. A new goal, a new season, a new commitment to follow Jesus. At the starting line, motivation is often enough to keep us moving forward. But somewhere along the way, life gets hard. Prayers seem unanswered. Relationships become strained. Our bodies age. Disappointments pile up.
The writer of Hebrews tells us, “Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will” (Hebrews 10:36). Notice that endurance isn’t needed at the starting point. It’s needed in the middle of the race—when the road is long, and the finish line seems far away.
So how do we keep moving forward?
The apostle Paul gives us the answer. He learned to look beyond his present circumstances and fix his eyes on eternity. Despite hardships, persecution, and suffering, he refused to lose heart because he knew something greater lay ahead. He understood that what is seen is temporary, while what is unseen is eternal.
What we focus on determines what we can endure.
When our attention is fixed solely on today’s problems, discouragement quickly follows. But when we remember that our ultimate destination is Jesus, hope rises. We gain the strength to take another step, trust God for another day, and keep running the race he has set before us.
The truth is that endurance is often forged in the very places we would rather avoid.
Romans 5 tells us that trials produce endurance, endurance develops character, and character strengthens our hope. God doesn’t waste our struggles. He uses them to deepen our faith and shape us into the image of Christ.
Here’s the good news: endurance doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes from Jesus himself. He endured the cross, overcame the grave, and now supplies the strength we need for our race. When our faith begins to falter, we can look to him and find fresh courage.
Friend, if you’re weary today, don’t give up. Don’t lose heart. God is still at work in you. Keep your eyes on Jesus and keep taking the next step. The finish line is closer than you think, and the one waiting there is worth every mile.
Prayer:
Lord, when I grow weary, help me keep my eyes on you. Strengthen me to endure the challenges ahead, and remind me that you are at work even when I cannot see it. Fill my heart with hope, and help me finish the race you have set before me. Amen.
