They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit. —Jeremiah 17:8
This has been a difficult week for me—a confrontation with life’s realities.
It reminded me just how fragile and unpredictable life can be. Have you been there? One moment, everything seems to be moving along smoothly, and the next you’re facing a challenge you never saw coming. The reality is that none of us are immune to hardship. Jesus never promised us a trouble-free life. In fact, he told us to expect trials. You may be enjoying a sweet season right now, and I hope you are. But eventually, every one of us will walk through difficult days. As much as we dislike them, those seasons often become the very places where God does his deepest work in us.
Throughout the Bible, trees are often used as powerful metaphors. In Jeremiah 17:8, the prophet paints a beautiful picture of a healthy tree to illustrate the life of a person who trusts in God. While difficult circumstances may surround them, they remain stable, peaceful, and fruitful because their confidence is anchored in Christ.
To be like a tree planted beside a riverbank is to have a constant source of nutrients. Its roots reach deep into the water, drawing strength and nourishment even when conditions above ground become harsh. In the same way, believers who remain connected to God through His Word, prayer, and daily dependence on him have access to a source of strength independent of their circumstances.
Without water, the tree weakens, withers, and eventually dies. Likewise, our souls were never designed to thrive apart from God. He is our source of life, wisdom, peace, and endurance. When our roots grow deep into Jesus, we can withstand seasons of heat and drought without losing heart.
Notice that Jeremiah does not say the heat will never come or that drought will never arrive. The tree still experiences both.
The difference is that it is prepared. Because its roots run deep, it does not merely survive difficult seasons—it continues to flourish. Its leaves remain green, and it continues to bear fruit.
The same can be true of us. When our trust is firmly rooted in God, life’s trials may shake us, but they do not have to uproot us. Even in seasons of loss, disappointment, uncertainty, or pain, God faithfully sustains those who draw their strength from him.
Father, Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes the challenges we face feel overwhelming. Thank You for reminding me that I do not have to rely on my own strength. Help me sink my roots deeper into you each day. Amen.
