I Am the Good Shepherd (4 of 7)

Every I AM statement by Jesus responds to a specific human need.

· Bread — Jesus satisfies our deepest hunger.

· Light — Jesus shows us where to walk.

· Gate — Jesus opens the way to the Father. He brings heaven and earth together again.

Today we are taking a look at I am the good shepherd. The Good Shepherd answers the deepest question of the human heart: “Does anyone really know me…and still love me?”

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep. “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me… (John 10:11-14)

There’s something comforting about hearing your name spoken by someone who truly knows you.

Not because they recognize your face, but because they know your story. They know your struggles, your fears, your failures—and they still choose to love you.

That’s the kind of Shepherd Jesus is.

In John 10, Jesus declares, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep, and they know me.” (John 10:14)

To His listeners, this image was deeply personal. Shepherds didn’t drive their sheep from behind. They walked ahead of them. The sheep followed because they recognized the shepherd’s voice and trusted his care.

Jesus says that’s how He leads us.

He doesn’t push us with fear or shame. He doesn’t abandon us when life becomes difficult. Unlike the hired hand who runs away when danger comes, the Good Shepherd stays. He protects. He provides. He even lays down His life for His sheep.

Think about that.

The Creator of the universe knows your name.

He knows where you’ve wandered. He knows the burdens you’ve been carrying. He knows the questions you’ve been afraid to ask. Yet He doesn’t turn away. Instead, He continues calling you closer.

In a world filled with competing voices, Jesus invites us to listen for His. His voice doesn’t condemn—it restores. It doesn’t manipulate—it leads. It doesn’t leave us anxious—it fills us with peace.

The Good Shepherd isn’t asking you to find your own way.

He’s asking you to trust the One who already knows the way.

Reflection: What voice has been influencing your heart lately? Does it lead you toward fear—or toward the peace of the Good Shepherd?

Remember this. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Therefore, I never have to face life alone.

The more we know who Jesus is, the more confidently we’ll follow Him.

I’ll see you next week as we explore another “I AM” statement.
