Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. (John 10:9)
Have you ever noticed that we naturally seek security?
We lock our doors at night. We buckle our seat belts. We install security systems and set passwords to protect what matters most.
Jesus understood that longing.
In John 10, Jesus declared, “Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.” (John 10:9)
To His listeners, this image was instantly recognizable.
When shepherds stayed overnight in the open fields, many sheepfolds lacked a wooden gate. Instead, the shepherd himself lay across the opening. His body became the entrance. Nothing entered the sheepfold without passing through him, and none of the sheep could wander out unnoticed.
He doesn’t simply show us the way to God—He is the way.
He is the gateway to forgiveness, peace, protection, and eternal life. Through Him, we find safety and freedom. We are no longer separated from God or left to fend for ourselves. The Good Shepherd stands between us and all that would steal, kill, and destroy.
So many voices compete for our attention, each promising fulfillment, security, or purpose. Yet Jesus makes an exclusive claim: there is only one gate to abundant life.
The invitation is wonderfully simple. We don’t need to climb the wall, earn God’s approval, or prove our worth. We simply come through the One who has already made a way.
The Shepherd became the Gate so His sheep could return home.
Reflection: Are you trusting your own efforts to secure your safety, or resting in the One who has already opened the way?
Remember this. Jesus is the Gate. Therefore, I can rest securely in the One who has already made a way.
The more we know who Jesus is, the more confidently we’ll follow Him.
I’ll see you next week as we explore another “I AM” statement.
